The aim of this workshop was to help the GÉANT user community in moving and accessing big data that they require for their research at the chosen compute locations.
It describe the design of a GÉANT prototype environment for high performance data transfers that will enable big science users to test their data transfer setups, and cover the advantages, design and use of De-Militarised Zones at the campus. In addition it will focus on the performance of end hosts and the importance of tuning, using 10 Gigabit and modern 100 Gigabit Ethernet NICs as examples, refresh our understanding of the challenges of moving data with TCP and give examples of the use of UDP based tools to move data covering the performance and the impact on the network. Furthermore, it was explained how eduPERT can support the community in GN4-2.
This eduPERT workshop provided advanced, hands-on training for performance and analysis tools using perfSONAR and UDPmon.
The first part of the workshop covered using the perfSONAR toolkit.
Instructors gave a quick overview of bwctl (iperf, iperf3, and
nuttcp), owamp, bwtraceroute and bwping, then focus how to use these
results for advanced troubleshooting and analysis.
In addition, this workshop introduced attendees to UDPmon, a
sophisticated network diagnostics program that can measure
UDP-achievable throughput, packet loss rate and loss distribution,
packet reorder rate and reorder distributions, inter-packet jitter,
relative one-way delay, the CPU load on local and remote nodes, etc.
The attendees learned to navigate udpmon and the features available
in perfSONAR through various exercises. The workshop exercises will be
simulated using Mininet, a simulation program that runs a virtual
network.

eduPERT & ESnet present: An Overview in Emerging (and not) Networking Technologies
The eduPERT team will be running its annual Performance U! Workshop in Dublin on the 18th-19th May running in conjunction with the annual TNC conference.
This event aims at training performance experts, providing validated performance resources and face to face training. Sunday will be the "Performance U!" annual workshop where the community can learn about performance implications of new tools and new technologies. The school will cover technical aspects like TCP tuning and measurement tools giving this year a much more practical hands-on approach. On Sunday afternoon before the conclusion of the day the annual meeting of eduPERT will be held.
On Monday, engineers from The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) will present the Science DMZ network design pattern. Materials will include an overview of network architecture, a discussion on the practical aspects of network security for scientific use cases, a review of the perfSONAR monitoring framework, and finally a discussion on bulk data transfer improvements made possible through advanced software and hardware.

On the 18th September the first summer workshop of Performance U! took place in Madrid during the EGI Technical forum. Here is the program:
https://indico.egi.eu/indico/sessionDisplay.py?sessionId=43&confId=1417#20130918
The workshop lasted three hours and different topics were covered. It is the first time that a performance training has been brought outside GÉANT. As part of the eduPERT outreach campaign, the summer workshop represents the bridge between our community and the end user communities around us.
The audience found the presentations useful and interesting and clearly expressed their appreciation of finally having a workshop about something that so far has always been presented as a black box to them.

The winter school is one of the events within the eduPERT Performance U! project. This year the winter school was held in Zurich from the 6th to the 8th March. The first part of the event was dedicated to topics like TCP and investigative tools and the second part was experimental and dedicated to new topics like performance in virtualisation, Infiniband, Sdn and more.
More than 20 people attended the school and there were different invited speakers that contributed to the success of the event.
You can find the slides here.
